The previous dwelling that was positioned on this steep and geotechnically sensitive site had been invaded by termites, and consequently most of the structure needed to be replaced.

The owner desired a house that had a street presence while complementing the surrounding natural environment. The concept of the wave roofs was inspired by the hills behind and also references the coastal environment with ‘the wedge’ surf break below.

The new house consists of a central stair core that takes the visitor through the levels to the rear of the house that captures the available north sun. Cross ventilation, light and space with areas for displaying art and larger gatherings of people are features of this dwelling.

Finishes such as copper cladding and polished concrete floors allow a low maintenance house and compliment the casual beach lifestyle.

Stress was minimised during this complex building project and the project was enjoyable thanks to the builders, Maincorp.

We are thankful to the owners of this property who allowed a free and open design palette to express our creativity.
