Whale Beach Road, Whale Beach

This beachside home draws inspiration from the surrounding coastal environment. Designed referencing passive solar design principles and built with long lasting low maintenance materials this new dwelling simultaneously honours its surrounding environment while achieving a striking street presence. The strong connection to its coastal setting is referenced through the wave roofs and internal walkways that suggest the surrounding hills and surf break below.

The new home includes spacious light filled areas designed to host large gatherings and display art. A central staircase takes the visitor to the rear of the house where the northern sun is welcomed into the living areas.

Situated on a steep and geotechnically sensitive site the original home had previously been invaded by termites, consequently the entire structure needed replacement. This enabled a complete re-design incorporating passive solar principles to draw on natural heating and cooling techniques. This ultimately resulted in an ecologically sustainable and energy efficient home. Finishes such as copper cladding and polished concrete floors allow a low maintenance house and compliment the laid-back beach lifestyle.
